''FIRST DAY AT WORK''
The sky was still dark with a tinge of purple as I made my way towards the factory on the outskirts of town. I was fifteen and this was my first day at work. I felt (text-style: "shudder")[nervous] and (color: yellow)[excited] at the same time.
I was met at the factory gate by Ned, the supervisor, who I had already met at my job interview. He showed me how to clock in and took me to the [[workshop]] to meet the rest of the maintenance crew. I was the first apprentice that the factory had taken on.
(set: $confidence to 5)
(set: $energy to 5)
(set: $isolation to 0)In the workshop I was introduced to Rod and Steve. Rod explained that he was working on a problem with the pressing machine that stamped out metal parts used in the production of toy robots.
Steve on the other hand said that he was installing a new fire alarm system.
Ned asked me who I would prefer working with on my first day?
Work with [[Rod]].
Work with [[Steve]].Working with Rod was interesting as he described how the pressing machine worked and showed me schematic diagrams to clarify the points that he made. He also encouraged me to ask questions and described the fault with the machine in detail.
I mainly watched him as he worked and handed him items from his toolbox when they were required. I also learned that in a factory "downtime" costs production and money. The line manager asked Rod several times when the machine would be back in service as he had fallen behind with regard to an important order.
The time passed quickly and Rod said it was time to head to the [[canteen]] for our break.Working with Steve wasn't as interesting as I thought it would be. He was under time pressure to get the fire alarm system working and, as a result, had little time to explain to me what he was doing. The work was also a bit technical for my first day and a lot of what he said went right over my head.
The diagrams were a little confusing, filled with symbols that I didn't understand. In the end I was glad when Steve said it was time to head to the [[canteen]] for our break.
(set: $confidence to it -1)
(set: $energy to it -1)
(set: $isolation to it +1)In the canteen I started to think about the choice that I had made.
(if: $confidence <5)[I thought that working with Steve might have been a bad choice as he hadn't the time to properly explain what he was doing. Also, it seemed a little technical for an apprentice on his first day.]
(else:)[Working with Rod had been a good choice as he had taken the time to tell me what he was doing and to answer my questions.]
